Not sure if you are ready for one-on-one instruction? Orion Music Studio is teaming up with Oxford Virtual Academy (OVA) in offering two 14-week workshops this September 2022.

Each class requires a Registration Fee of $12 and a Materials Fee of $15. All students must register as space is limited.

BEGINNING UKULELE taught by Josh Martelli

Wednesdays 1:00pm

Grades 3 and up (max 5 students)

Have you ever wanted to play the ukulele? Learn to play the ukulele in a relaxed group environment. Students will learn simple songs, basic chords, and fundamental note reading. 

No experience necessary. Ukulele required.

BEGINNING SONGWRITING taught by Jennie Knaggs

Thursdays 1:30pm

Grades 4 and up (max 8 students)

You love music; are you ready to write your own songs? Do you have a notebook of lyrics but no melody? This course explores how songs are made, how to write descriptive lyrics and apply chords, rhythm and melody. 

No experience necessary.

"Applying CAGED Harmony" - Taught by Marc Michaud
7:30pm – 8:30pm
 
You know some chords, but now what do you do with them? Learn about chord relationships on the guitar, how they work together, and how to play more efficiently with another guitarist, as well
as improve solo technique. Barre chord experience necessary.

With a Bachelors of Music in Guitar Performance from Wayne State University, Marc Michaud is a classically trained guitarist performing both as a soloist and for ensemble in a wide variety of styles, including jazz, rock, funk and blues. A music educator since 1993, Marc teaches beginning and advanced guitar at Orion Music Studio.

 


 
Saturday, September 24th
“Beginning Songwriting” - Taught by Jennie Knaggs
3pm – 4:30pm
 
Find your voice! Get your ideas on paper while learning popular song structures and styles; strengthening lyrics, delivery, and experimenting with chord combinations. All instruments welcome. Some knowledge of chords is helpful but not necessary. 


Instructor Jennie Knaggs is a composer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. She has been writing, recording and performing for over 20 years in a variety of styles including folk, pop, rock and new music. A classically trained vocalist, Jennie is a graduate of Antioch College, and currently
performs with her folk duo Lac La Belle, and teaches voice, guitar, mandolin and ukulele at Orion Music Studio.

“How to Prepare for a Jam Session” - Taught by Josh Martelli
3pm – 5pm
 
Tired of playing alone? Learn the basics of playing with other musicians, build your listening skills and improve your solo technique. Guitarists and pianists welcome! Attendees should have basic chord knowledge for this workshop.

With a degree in jazz studies from Wayne State University, Instructor Josh Martelli performs across the Detroit metro area in a variety of different groups, and teaches piano, guitar, and ukulele at Orion Music Studio. 
 



Sunday, October 16th
"Fingerpicking Fundamentals" - Taught by Nick Schillace
3pm – 4:30pm
 
Solo fingerstyle guitar is one of the most challenging and rewarding ways of playing the guitar. Get started using your thumb and fingers and begin your "fingerpicking" journey with an internationally recognized expert in the style. This class is for intermediate guitar players with working knowledge of chords, scales, tab and fretboard notes. 
 
Instructor and Orion Music Studio owner Nick Schillace earned his graduate degree in music from Wayne State University in 2002. He also studied finger picking in West Virginia, and is known for his specialty in the American Primitive playing style. Owner of Orion Music Studio since 2000, he has toured nationally and internationally in support of his solo recordings, as well as his work with folk duo, Lac La Belle. Nick teaches beginning and advanced guitar and banjo at Orion Music
Studio.
 

 

Saturday November 12th
"Introduction and Exploration of Guitar Effects" - Taught by Dan Velic

Ever curious how your favorite musicians get their signature sound? Have an electric guitar but not sure how to get the most of it? Learn the use of different effect pedals to develop tone and texture, and discover loop pedals and how to arrange your melodies in a loop to advance your playing style. Basic chord knowledge necessary.
 
With a degree from Wayne State in classical guitar with a secondary focus in jazz guitar, instructor Dan Velic performs all over metro Detroit (both acoustic and electric), while teaching
beginning and advanced guitar lessons at Orion Music Studio.
